His advice reinforces the model minority trope: we should just work hard, don't complain too much, etc. How has that worked out? We've been socially conditioned to NOT speak out about racism, minimize it, question it when it happens to us — when we should be doing the opposite.

The history is clear - the Nisei founded business, established farms , and did everything to be American including being born here- they were still sent to camps.
There are Americans who happily accept, respect & love fellow non-white Americans and others who, sadly, will never. It's hard to accept this. The former don't give a shit about whether you wear red, white & blue and no amount of flag waving will ever convince the latter.
I completely agree with you. It definitely is not on you to do anything at all. Racism is never the fault of or responsibility of its victims. Thinking that victims of racism are somehow responsible for it is some seriously cattywumpus upside down reasoning.
It's a perpetuation of the racism for the victim to take that responsibility.
