    It always blows my mind that Kramer vs. Kramer, a drama about divorce, was both the best picture winner AND the highest-grossing movie of 1979.

    Of course -- on another related, and maybe sadder, topic -- "best-picture winner" and "popular film" did not used to be mutually exclusive. "The Best Years of Our Lives," "Lawrence of Arabia," "The Godfather," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" -- all major hits.

    Likely scenario this year: they give Black Panther "best popular film" so they can pat themselves on the back for honoring a diverse movie, and then proceed as usual.

    The Oscars have always been caught between appealing to a wider audience for ratings & making a show for movie fans. Viewership has been down for a while & stems from a variety of factors. Watering down the show doesn't seem worth it.

    Also, the only person ever to win Oscars for both acting and writing, so she is truly a queen.

    Never forget: our red carpet queen Emma Thompson won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1995 (SENSE AND SENSIBILITY). 👑
