WAIT, HOW MANY COUNTS?: For contests within the recount margin, there would be 1) the initial tabulation 2) a hand-count audit (performed by political parties) of election day ballots from a statistically significant # of voting locations

COUNTING THROUGH DECEMBER: If automatic recounts are required of Maricopa County ballots, staff, volunteers, and the political parties will likely be working for much of December to complete the recount, which also requires an additional hand count audit.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Under state law, county supervisors must canvass (certify) results between six and 20 days after the General Election, after all required audits and post-election tests have been performed. Then there's a statewide canvass. And THEN the recounts would begin ⬇️

IMPACT IN MARICOPA COUNTY: If this new law had been in effect in Nov. 2020, five contests in Maricopa County would have been subject to a recount. We know there are likely to be many close races this election as well.

THE LAW: Contests separated by one-half of one percent will be recounted. The previous threshold was one-tenth of one percent. In statewide races, a margin of ~15,000 votes could trigger the recount.
