The design of input type=checkbox assumed they'd be used for "select multiple," where a group shares a name and each value is distinct. If the name ends in [], then your framework probably plays nicely with this "classic" approach.

No. Being valid isn't the same as being common. Generally, complex data is passed via JSON POST. It is an option to do what you're asking. It depends on the goal as to whether you should. My gut says something is off in the architecture but I lack context.
