Whew. I heard PARASITE won the Iowa caucus. Good job, voters. Now on to New Hampshire, Bong Joon-ho.

Andrew Yang won't win tonight. But it is remarkable that a man who began with no name recognition, no well-known business successes, no prior electoral runs, and no personal fortune has outlasted governors, mayors, and senators.

Anyway—happy Black History Month. It’s wonderful to live in an age of black quarterbacks, online archives, biracial friends, Sunday Edwardian dramas, two Latinas on a Super Bowl stage, museums, serendipity, conversations about history, opportunity, service, repair, honor. ❤️

Yep. 1000%. MULAN is most certainly going to be the best Disney live action film.

KNIVES OUT is now the biggest non-horror original live-action film since INTERSTELLAR (2014).

Tacoma, despite its complicated past, is now one of the most diverse areas in America--along with having one of the highest mixed-race populations in the country. Great article written by about this very special place:

Isn't this a glorious photo? Very rare. Quite a find. The Ninth Cavalry marches in Teddy Roosevelt's inauguration parade in 1905. It was not ludicrous. These interactions didn't have to be poisonous. Humans are not esoteric. We didn't have to wait until 1948 to integrate.

I don't know if the Military Order of the Grand Ol' Pink Water Buffaloes voted to allow the saviors of San Juan to join their organization, or was it yet another tale of exclusion. The history of these closed fraternal groups is still interesting:

There is a tragic incident of slander in 1904, during the first integrated joint military exercises in America--which happened right here also. I'm still working on the research, but it's heartbreaking. Something you'd see in a film. Lies. False accusations. Dishonor. Removal.

The history is filled again and again with slander and violence. False accusations. Theatrical news articles. Rocks thrown. Men killed. Dishonorable discharges. Racial incidents. Always the men of the Ninth are at fault. They are censured, shamed, removed...even from the border.

One of the hardest things about researching African-American military history is that erasure. We may look through several hundred, even a thousand photos before we can find one of any of the Ninth Cavalry. Many of the heroes of San Juan Hill have no photos.

The medal on the lower left was issued at the Tacoma 1909 Military Order of the Serpent convention. It is so lovely to find these connections, artifacts, stories, photos, records. This history happened less than five miles from where I am sitting, watching the Super Bowl.

My favorite part of that 1909 Tacoma Times September 8 newspaper article. (Parades were very popular in this era.) "...one of the most ludicrous parade[s] ever seen in Tacoma will be witnessed on Pacific avenue..."

Anyway, these vets meeting as the Military Order of the Serpent: one of many esoteric fraternal organizations in the US at the turn of the century, each with their own costumes, rituals, medals, weird names, certificates and conventions.

What? You didn't know that Teddy and the Rough Riders got overrrun, and the Ninth Cavalry rode to their rescue? They didn't teach that in American history class, in American folklore? It's quite shocking how much --- erasure --- drives the narrative of history.

First, over a hundred years ago, in 1909, a Spanish War veterans group gathered here in my city and argued about whether they'd admit the heroic Ninth Cavalry--a group of African-American soldiers who saved Teddy Roosevelt's ass on San Juan Hill.

Perfect evening. Blazing fire, eating pizza, researching obscure/esoteric military orders, and watching the Super Bowl + commercials....while chatting with my best friend.
