Thoughts: *pay gay is real, but 1. People who've been in the industry for a while know which companies pay considerable higher salaries, for different reasons. Lots of young people and URMs aren't familar with this, therefore you leave them believing they're seriously underpaid.

2. Experience in the tech industry also teaches us that there are people with the same titles, yet very different responsibilities across companies. You can be a Principal eng in companyX, and a Senior eng in companyZ. You get to decide the path you want to take...

3. It is also NOT uncommon to meet brilliant people who consciously decide to take a slight & temporary pay cut/"demotion" in favor of something else, like being able to build tech they feel particularly passionate about, or in a team with very cool human beings

4. The opposite happens too: we've all met someone who wants to switch jobs, but they find out that very few companies can actually match their current salary for a similar role, because their current companies pay *very* above-average salaries, so they have to compromise :)

Anyway, it all depends on what you want: 1. if your dream is to get millions, regardless of other factors, make it happen: focus your search on big/famous companies that give outstanding comp packages, give you free food, and expense the air your breathe :)

2. if your focus is the tech itself, a particular team, a remote-friendly company, the company values and/or anything in between, chances are you won't get paid the same as individuals in 1., but you still get to make a very good salary. *You get to choose* :)

Addendum: it is also irresponsible, as an overrepresented person in a trendy/hot company, to tell underrepresented people to simply ask companies to match those salaries :) I do not believe in limitations, but the politics each demographic has to play are very different ;)

After some years, if tech really makes you happy, and you don't only do it for the $, you come to terms with the fact that people with similar o less experience make more $ for reasons that don't resonate with you, and that's OK. You can still have a great salary & be happy
