Maybe a reason why the NA (New Adult) genre never took off before was because of the awful name. When I first started in publishing (in '09!), YA was called TEEN and I remember long meetings about getting the powers that be to call it Young Adult. NA needs a new brand.

This is sooooo not the right word for it, but I often think of New Adult more like... Adulting. Maybe this is just me, but in my head I've always separated the two as such: YA = Figuring shit out. NA = Getting your shit together.

What we need to do is have a big group branding brainstorm and come up with a new name and then just....own it. Only use that word and then convince B&N & other retailers to create new shelves for it.

Who was New Adult aimed at? With that name, I really can't tell.

The early 20s crowd who have to deal with real life adult problems but still haven't quite figured out who they are yet.

Let's just rebrand it ourselves and invent a new category and give it the whole movie montage makeover.

I was so excited when I heard about new adult and what I imagined the category to have a wide range of genre options--like romance, SFF, contemporary. And then it kinda got a bad rep and disappeared. Sigh.

It wasn't handled correctly the first time around. It wasn't universal or inviting. I think it needs a second chance!

Yes! Also maybe because it came out of indie romance? It felt like the only books being promoted under the label were explicit/romance heavy? But like, I have a whole shelf of books on Goodreads of what I wish NA would be.pic.twitter.com/eiLylOTKOm

Agreed, NA always had a bit of a condescending ring to me. Like, "here are some books for the floundering twenty-some-year-olds who don't have a clue what's going on!" And then it took on the bad reputation and went downhill from there.

As someone who was a floundering 20-something when NA first came on the scene, I respectfully disagree. I was a New Adult trying to figure things out, and I very much appreciated a genre that showcased that struggle.
