Reading through #RaceB4Race threads this weekend & reflecting on the extreme problems with equity, particularly for BIPOC and w/r/t sexual harassment/assault, that #medievaltwitter faces, I am reminded again of a question asked at an IONA panel: what are you willing to give up?

White medievalists—including those w/ precarious employment, including those looking for jobs or hoping for tenure, including those who are women or queer or neurodivergent—need to recognize our complicity in a field that’s far too happy to sit back on its heels & hope for change

(NB: obviously there are also plenty who don’t have any desire for change at all; I am speaking in this of folx who at least claim to desire change but are never willing to do anything when it might cause discomfort for themselves)

The fact is that a field that refuses to reckon with its racist and white supremacist past AND PRESENT is one that is harmful and unsafe for BIPOC, and that includes current and future colleagues AND students

Let me say it clearly: I am currently on the job market. I dearly hope to stay in academia. I love my research and I love teaching, and I truly believe I can do good. If speaking out against racism “costs” me a job, then SO BE IT. (PS, hire me, y’all, I’m fabulous!)

And another note: yes, I’m tweeting about this, but I’m well aware that tweeting/blogging/FBing about these issues is not *doing the work* of an anti-racist accomplice. Don’t tweet or like or fave things and then pat yourself on the back. It’s not enough. It’s never been enough.
