Demanding access to ballroom culture(s) via queerness whilst not being in or of any ballroom communities and the dimensions of anti-blackness and the erasure of Black queer people and specifically, Black trans women, within this entire debacle is violent.

This Jameela situation is really showing the dangers of the neoliberalistion of identity politics and how identity claims are weaponised by the powerful to over-identify with and subsequently, gain access to and profit off the cultural production of marginalised communities

"I think what you’re seeing is nothing less than the decline and fall of the — what I call the folklórico-industrial complex of U.S. Latino literature." ~ on 1 of the effects of 's unprecedented victory in U.S. publishing.

I love Moby Dick. But instead of buying a copy like this, I recommend Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. Instead of this copy of Alice in Wonderland, try Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney. Instead of this copy of Jekyll and Hyde, try, well, anything by Victor LaValle.

What's not mentioned in here, though highlighted in the press release I received, is how they picked these titles: they used ~AI~ to scour a corpus of 100+ books to determine whether or not the protagonist was explicitly described as white, and if they weren't, they went to town!

I don't want to direct quote my students because that's not cool, but you've opened some eyes down here in my majority-White British Literature survey course. Thank you for your words. (Friends, if you haven't seen this essay, it's here: )

I... feel like some people really think that "my culture is the default" means that it is unmarked & something else can just be substituted in its place with no textual change. Adhlkflkdsjflksjflkhagdalsdáafldsékfjhdg

None of these pieces of advice about how to decrease isolation in academia are *bad* but they miss the point that the current system incentivizes radical & extended retreat from social life in any form:

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been told my novel is too sad/ hard to read. For I wrote about trauma, digestibility, a too-white publishing industry and how that all gave us the migrant story as thriller in American Dirt

This is the obsession of multicultural representation in the neoliberal context. The identity of POC who engage in flattening and homogenizing discourse about "their community" is so valuable.
