Autopoiesis is the end. Adaptivity is the means. Active Inference is the means to the means.

Hard & easy problems, formal & informal methods, life-nonlife distinction. Is life a predicate, property, interaction, or organization? The statistical turn in 20th century physics. Move from a science of objects to a science of patterns & relations. Contingency & convergence.

A collective intelligence experiment: Why (and how) to be worried about : I've laid out a core argument that I will iterate on. Feel free to comment, add links and resources for and against either on this thread or in the document.

I love these diagrams where Friston is in every quadrant, totally accurate but cracks me up every time.

Sometimes when I gather the results of a big batch of lengthy experiments I pretend that I'm a science-farmer, harvesting the yield of the day.

"sell me this pen" except it's even more useless than a pen. It's your research. plus some thoughts on the narrative and the creative component of problem-creation in science. 2/52:

Just made this plot for my class next week: Rough article count (WoK) in neuroimaging referencing title or topic "activation" vs. "connectivity" | Not a well controlled bibliometric study, for sure, but the major trends seem pretty clear

New paper w , "Learning as the Unsupervised Alignment of Conceptual Systems". Supervised learning tasks can be solved by purely unsupervised means by exploiting correspondences across systems (e.g., text, images, etc.). 1/5

It's not often you see the phrase "I'm shitting bricks" in , but it's not often that mathematicians claim to solve a problem like Connes' embedding conjecture. Surprised this isn't on the front page of all the other tabloids!

Knowledge enhances perceptual processing. Here and show that word context boosts the representational fidelity of individual letters in early visual cortex & increases the coupling to the reading network. Great!

I would love to write a general introduction to cybernetics from a more (philosophy of) cognitive science perspective, as the existing books are either more sociological (Heims, Pickering), or from a more phenomenological perspective (Dupuy). Am I missing any other existing work?

The Case for Bayesian Deep Learning ”Bayesian or not, the prior will certainly be imperfect. Avoiding an important part of the modelling process because one has to make assumptions, however, will often be a worse alternative than an imperfect assumption.”

We developed a new standard space to compare levels of brain organisation. It stems from a multi-modal cortical wiring scheme, which neatly links local cytoarchitecture to global functional dynamics. The structural manifold preprint and code are out now!
