I try not to draw attention to Apple-related “petitions” or similar things, because most are just a few unreasonable people venting in futility. But this has over 16,000 signatures. That’s not just a few people. I don’t expect a recall. But Apple should take notice of this.https://twitter.com/mrmatthewt/status/994963830852612096 …

Marco, please cover this petition about the keyboard problems on ATP! We’ve received little press coverage so far... https://www.change.org/p/apple-apple-recall-macbook-pro-w-defective-keyboard-replace-with-different-working-keyboard …

I first heard about it a week ago. I expected it to fizzle out. It hasn’t.

The problem with that petition is that they specifically and only target the MacBook Pro. In fact, the original 12” Retina display MacBook, which we do own, has, to my knowledge, the most unreliable keyboard of all of them. cc: @mrmatthewt

As far as I can tell, they actually have roughly the same failure rate over time. The 12” has just been around for about 1.5 years longer.

I agree, but IMO if you are going to have a petition, it should be both for the MacBook Pro and MacBook. I am betting that the MBP anti-reflective display coating had an even higher failure rate, which is why Apple offers free 5 year replacement/repair.

If it makes you feel better, my 2015 MacBook Retina has a worse keyboard.

Fixing that won’t gonna cost you $700 though. And you must have been the unlucky person who has gotten a faulty keyboard. In general, pre-butterfly keyboards were well made and much much more reliable.

2015 Macbook Retinas had the first-gen butterfly keyboard. Less travel, less feedback, breaks easier.

I’ve owned two 2016 MBPs and the keyboard failed on both of them - the second (bought 4 weeks ago) failed within 3 weeks. I’m unconvinced The failure rate has improved with the “second gen” keyboard

Fortunately Apple has now been slapped with a class action suit: https://9to5mac.com/2018/05/12/apple-keyboard-lawsuit/ … First the iPhone slowing scandal. On now this. Hope this will wake up the greedy execs at Apple.

Marco, 👏! Long time ATP listener, & found myself nodding in agreement during the keyboard-failure chats. @caseyjohnston stories prompted the petition. Check out the petition comments, this isn’t venting, it’s legitimate customer concerns from loyal Apple peeps

BTW I think the keyboard problems are so widespread Apple should discontinue selling these MBPs until they have a replacement keyboard. What Mac in the entire line can be recommended other than iMac/iMac Pro? Yes MacBook Air “works,” but non-Retina is embarrassing/fugly.
