Effectively, the price of a $1/month patronage app is actually raised: from $3–5 once to $12/year. That’s progress, I think.

@marcoarment but isn't it more like every user paying $3-5 once vs. 0.1% of users paying $12/year?

@jeffinitelyjeff @marcoarment but removing that $3-5 barrier increases the number of people who might eventually pay $12 a year

@goatenthusiast7 @marcoarment sure, but even increasing user base by 100x ends up with net decrease if only 1/1000 donate

@jeffinitelyjeff @marcoarment where did 1/1000 come from exactly?

      5. Marco Arment ‏@marcoarment 12 Nov 2015

@goatenthusiast7 @jeffinitelyjeff My patronage rate is already far above that.

@marcoarment @goatenthusiast7 "already"? don't you expect patronage rate, like App Store purchases, to drop off after the initial launch?

      7. nathan bousfield ‏@nbousfield_ 12 Nov 2015 Stevenson Ranch, CA

@jeffinitelyjeff @marcoarment but the key part of patronage is that it is ongoing and doesn’t rely on the launch volume to be sustainable

@goatenthusiast7 @marcoarment non-auto-renewing subscriptions means that by any realistic projections there will be drop-off

@marcoarment They really depends on what percentage of your users decide to pay, though.

@HarveyNick So has any other monetization method ever tried.

@marcoarment Yes, but it’s pay at the door versus pay on the way out if you want to. Which doesn’t necessarily scale across cultures.

@HarveyNick Neither does paying for apps up front, or paying to unlock features, or responding to ads.

@marcoarment Very true. And I really hope this is a lift from the bottom, rather than a search for something below it.

@marcoarment The question is whether it's it scalable to work for many app devs:https://twitter.com/eli_schiff/status/664851460039925761 …

@eli_schiff No, the question is whether it’s an overall improvement over the previous method. How well was the status quo working out?

      3. Eli Schiff ‏@eli_schiff 12 Nov 2015

@marcoarment It's worth trying. I'm mainly curious how long it will be feasible, which depends on how many devs adopt the model.

@marcoarment Even if people don't renew the patronage it's better for you. Will this keep you adding new features to make it worth renewing?

@marcoarment which is great. I wonder if it is scalable though. If every app starts asking for a $1 a month, I’m going to have a problem!

@BlackPlastic @marcoarment thank you! I can only pay a monthly subscription for so many things at once…

@marcoarment It also works around the Apple “only free updates” problem. I wish it wasn’t needed, though.
