Most of that cost is the SSD, and mostly because SSDs above 1 TB weren’t offered until recently. If your 2014 was somehow available with a 4 TB SSD, it would’ve cost a lot more than this. That said, SSDs are so cheap now that 512 GB should be standard on any Mac ending in “Pro”.https://twitter.com/rickplayswarr/status/1130892717762834433 …

@marcoarment @caseyliss @siracusa I hope you discuss how much the MAXed version of the new MacBook Pro costs. I used to just max everything when ordering a new one. Not anymore. Staying on my 2014 Laptop for now pic.twitter.com/SFHKgOgece

And of course let’s also not forget that the 27” iMacs all start with Fusion Drives and the 21.5 models start with a regular. spinning. disk. —- in 2019 😩🤢🤮

I paid around £130 for 1TB SSDs last month. Crazy how much cheaper they’ve become, considering the experience they give over spinning platters:-).

A regular old 2.5in ssd from Samsung is $661 apple charging almost 3k. I’d throw 1 or two into my gaming rig and bob your uncle that’s if I was limited on m.2 slotspic.twitter.com/m3A01EneOR

SSD's have gotten way less expensive, yet Apple charges a lot for storage upgrades. An M.2 2TB SSD is around $640 at retail prices.https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-evo-plus-2-tb/p/0D9-0009-00685?Description=samsung%20m.2%202tb&cm_re=samsung_m.2_2tb-_-9SIA12K98U5278-_-Product …

I don't think it's a big deal if 256gb is the baseline, but the cost to upgrade to larger capacities are ridiculous. 256gb->512gb $200, 256gb->1tb, $600 !!! You can buy 1tb SSD drives now for like $120-$250 (standard to NVME)

I would add that 16Gb of memory should be standard. Never mind that in the UK it is another £180 to upgrade. This seems extortionate.

Exactly. Year old graphics/memory/storage parts... year old pricing (even though wholesale cost is down) on upgrades... on a non-upgradable machine... "Pro".

This of course doesn't work with 2016-current MBPs, which have the flash chips soldered onto the logic board.
