Important clarification: the new 4th-gen design will be installed during repairs, but only for 3rd-gen-keyboard models: the 2018 Air and the 2018 13/15” with Touch Bar.https://twitter.com/noliberalbull/status/1130884078947823617 …

So all repaired machines will get 4th gen design (airs and MacBooks included, according to article)... does that mean that those models are getting new design in shipping units, too?

Good clarification. Still doesn’t 100% answer if those 2018 machines shipping new, today (or sometime soon), have the 4th gen design or still the 3rd gen. Cc @panzer

Which I suppose only matters for the 2018 Air. But still, I’ve gotta order 40 Airs soon. Will I get a different keyboard design if I order today vs 3 weeks from now?

I’d hold off on the order for 40 Airs for another few months if you can.

Can’t quite wait that long. Need them by early July for the new school year. But I could delay a bit, if it’s gonna make a difference.

So I guess that’s it. This loud, unreliable, hard-to-type-on, ergonomic atrocity is the future of the Mac experience.

        What are your ergonomic concerns?

Also, I’ve done head-to-head comparisons using typing test sites (e.g., keyhero) and after 2 years of use, I still make 1.4x the errors at 80% the typing speed as I did on the old kb. I find absolutely no positive attributes of the new model.

They really need to think about some way to make it right for 2016 and 2017 owners beyond just “come in and keep getting keyboards replaced”… This is doing in enormous harm to the brand reputation to totally screw over people like that

This actually gives me a lot of confidence in my 2018 15”. I’ve not had issues, but I’m quite comfortable that if I do encounter them I’ll be able to easily get it fixed.

So 2016 models get Gen 1 replacements? I've got a 2016 maxed 15" TB and absolutely can't stand the thing anymore. Most keys gives me occasional issues unless I stop and slam the key 5-10 times as hard as I can. USB-C ports hold onto cables like a hot knife through butter. 👎

So my 2017 key with a stick command key is SOL? Not like that's an important key or anything 😤

That'll teach me to buy a 2017 refurb from Apple because it's covered by AppleCare. Lesson learned about refurbs....and maybe, finally, Apple.

I don’t care what they promise. They promised that the 2018 model would fix the keyboard issues. But they didn’t: it’s still the butterfly keyboard.
