The other think is what I call, when I teach students about this, adversarial complexity. One party is battling the other’s sense of which routine or argument or process should apply.

Love the bibliography. Section V.3 makes me wonder about other angles on routine: Deterministic? Predictable? Boring? Automatable? Repetitive? Or as you allude earlier in the piece, a sign of some economic capture and related sense of moral rot?
