Wouldn't it be wonderful if we finally knew with reasonable confidence who actually wrote the works of Shakespeare?

Indeed. It would mean that we had an adequate framework for determining the reasonableness of confidence in such cases. This is the “hard problem” of epistemology.

It's really just a problem with people being gullible and not using common sense. Of being unwilling to say "I don't know, let's do more research"
