Seems like a dilemma we face every day with our fellow humans, guessing and assuming (often wrongly) that they care about an issue in the same manner we do—or at all. And because we know that people say one thing and act another way, even outright asking doesn’t solve this issue

I’m not convinced it matters. Humans are also black boxes, whom we know as caring by looking at their actions. Intent is inferred from the surrounding circumstances, I suppose.
