There is no translation. He’s not speaking a language. He’s doing a generic “Asian language” no different than the racist “Ching Chong” impersonations that have existed for decades. This was in response to a speaker suggesting that parents make up language for their children.

I think in this case context matters. What took place before this? Also what is the translation of what he said? This matters when posting edits or clips calling for accountability.OR you could be completely correct and it was totally out of line. Context/clarity i necessary toda

This is a terrible apology. It lacks any acknowledgement of what he actually did, offers no analysis of why it was a problem, and offers no real restorative possibilities. It’s more like “I did a thing by accident. My bad. Now look at this multicultural lounge!”

The chancellor of Thomas L. Keon made this racist joke at graduation. I’m baffled as to how he could have thought this was appropriate. It’s also disappointing how many people laughed at his awful remarks. What does true accountability look like in this context?

Yesterday I was removed as Dean @UH_SocialWork. While this isn’t what I hoped for, I’m very proud of my time as Dean and particularly of advancing an abolitionist perspective in social work. Unfortunately, the resistance to this was too great, and as a result I am no longer Dean.

Successfully chaired a faculty search and completed a full 3 year term as chair of the college personnel committee. Who says senior faculty don’t do service? 😝

Counterpoint: Academia tends to squash a sense of achievement, especially for marginalized academics. Consider this your invitation to brag. What’s something you did this year — big or small, work-related or not — that you’re super proud of?

Advocacy and protest lack the capacity and ability to ever change this. Why? Because only God, through the power of the gospel, and the work of the "indwelling" Holy Spirit is there capacity and ability to hault and transform human hearts. The racism you suggest will be until

If anything, being fat makes you invisible & worthless in hospitals, as they blame everything on your weight & shame you for existing as a fat person any chance they get. So if we even allow for that, it’s less about BMI and more about NEGLECT, the original point!

What do health habits have to do with black women having their symptoms ignored? Or the systematic overestimation of Black women’s pain capacity? I understand that you want to repeat White racist talking points. But don’t be so distracted by misogynoir that you miss the point. twitter.com/_barringtonii/…

Exactly. Not to mention the flaws of BMI as it pertains to the bodies of non-White people.

And plenty systemic reasons exist for obesity as well even if we foolishly wanted to make it that singular issue

Imagine telling one of the greatest football players ever— who played 13 Hall of Fame seasons, won 3 SuperBowls, and retired as the all time leader at his position in multiple statistical areas— that he’s JEALOUS simply bc he said Tom Brady is 🗑️ this year. Skip is something else

This isn’t true. It’s not backed by research. It takes a special kind of misogynoir to reduce a multitude of systemic, ecological, and sociodemographic factors down to “Black women are dying because they’re fat.”

Shockingly 2 of 3 reasons for maternal mortality is connected to being overweight/obese. 4of5 BW overweight+. The 3rd reason, racial disparities, is a catch all. If we wanted to compare 🍎 to 🍎 let's try women of the same ht/wt, economic position, marital status, etc.

It’s bothersome that this tweet has encouraged people to openly attack Black women’s overall health. Obesity “statistics” have been given with the implication that we’re all unhealthy and that’s the reason for our maltreatment by medical systems. Y’all really hate us.

Black women are routinely disregarded. Their pain is literally dismisses or underestimated. Their reported symptoms are often ignored. There is a reason why Black mothers, and Black children, die more at birth and soon afterward.

You can say that it’s purely a gender issue. But that would be untrue. Black women are treated worse than their white counterparts. This is based on data not anecdotes.

I understand this is anecdotal, but having been a woman and befriended many women in this country that have needed emergency care and have been ignored or treated with disdain by our healthcare community, I can say this is a gender issue, not necessarily a race issue.

The Black Panthers were founded AFTER Malcolm died. Knowing these kinds of things is important, brother.

Dr King might have lived had he, Malcolm and the Black Panthers United to create a secure black community. Instead, we were marching to get closer to the very people who wiped out all three of them. Instead of freedom, we got crack, student loans and broken families instead.
