Earth physically rotates in 23hours 56min relative to distant stars – a Sidereal Day, BUT it takes 24hours to rotate relative to the Sun – a Solar Day The difference? Earth orbits the Sun, so the Sun appears to move (down, in the vid), which means Earth needs +4mins to catch up!

🥳02/02/2020 Happy International Palindrome Day! Today is a palindromic date whether you use the MM/DD/YYYY or the DD/MM/YYYY system. The next time this happens will be 12/12/2121 so make sure you take the time to yell a nerdy HAZZAH today because that's a palindrome too!

As you keep zooming in, you think: it's a point! No, it's a line! No, it's a rectangle! No, it's a bunch of points! No... It's a subset of the plane invented by Simon Willerton, which shows that your estimate of the dimension can keep changing as you zoom in more and more.

Thought about Grothendieck vs Bourgain some more; my analogy would be more like: Yes, Grothendieck would put the nut in water, wait a few days, and it would open on its own. Bourgain would observe that your fingers alone need to be 10x as forceful to crack the nut, (cont’d)

If you were inside an orbiting space station that rotated to keep one face towards the body it orbited, some free falling objects would execute elliptical motion around the centre of the station.

During a gravitational elliptic orbit, the path traced by tip of the velocity vectors (collected together as to have a common origin) is a circle 😲 (made with )

Newtonian gravitation in a curved surface (warped space-time): is it possible to reproduce an inverse square Newtonian force (and an elliptic orbit) with a simple kitchen plate? (that’s totally useless but I couldn’t help working on it) (click/tap to pause - made with )

I updated my post about the Janus cosmological model to include an explanation of in terms of a gravitational lensing enhancement due to the effect of light traveling through a negative-mass medium.

Just what I was looking for – mapping class groups as sweaters being put on by a torus. Beautiful analogies 👇🏽!

The skills you need to pass exams and the skills you need to do research are (very) different. So exam grades are a very poor predictor of how good you can be at doing science. (I was a B student at best)

These notes on analytical mechanics are such a pleasure to read that I feel an incontrollable urge to disseminate them further: It’s wonderful to see such pearls legally and freely available online
