      I thought it'd take one or two hours top, which might have happened if not for a) a solder bridge between two I/O pins b) underdocumented contrast pin (no, you can't pull it to 0V) c) HD44780 clones being a buggy hellscape d) signal integrity and HD44780's poor noise immunity

      It works on some units, on others it's way too dark to be usable. I learned this the hard way a long time ago... started putting in a pot or at least a resistor divider.

      Fun fact: BootMii shipped with that code enabled for several versions (in delay-timed mode, output only, doesn't care if no LCD is attached). I never documented the pinout and I don't think anyone but me ever actually hooked an LCD up, but it had pretty status messages.
