the problem with this it's easy to veer off into “color-blind” territory from here. it's not a free cultural exchange because there's a steep power difference. (which is why nobody complains when there's e.g. Americans in Lederhosn at a beer fest because Germans aren't oppressed)

Then maybe the focus should be on fixing the "steep power difference" (call it what it is: blatant institutionalized racism, especially in the US) instead of on stifling cultural exchange.
