No, but direct I/O is a bad idea anyway, because it isn't actually how filesystems are used in practice. If you want to do a cache-cold test then just drop caches with echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches.

pv -pertb < fancyOS.img >/dev/sdX dosn't work on a filesystem. The output it reports while getting any os-image onto an usb-flash-drive is a blazing fast operation and freezes for a few minutes afterwards. But i like pv for operations that have at least one endpoint in software

I'm using that when writing to block devices, there it should be okay and I like to have a real estimated time instead of having pv "finish" in a second with a few minutes of syncing afterwards :-/
