I use pv(1) all the time. Not a standard command, but everyone should install it and start using it. It replaces dd for most use cases and Just Does The Right Thing by default. dd in newer versions also shows progress information: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/null status=progress
No actual progress bar, percentage, or ETA. It only shows what pv shows in dumb pipe mode.
