tar cv [..] | pigz | pv > upper.tar.gz
I actually use pigz quite often in that kind of situation, not sure why I didn't for that particular one.

Or even pixz. With enough cores, the cpu time that xz requires is no longer an issue most of the time, and often worth the extra file size efficiency.
