Replaces dd?

dd is useless most of the time. You can just pipe to/from block devices normally, e.g. with cat. pv is smart enough to query stdin *or* stdout device size and use it to show the progress bar and determine ETA. zcat file.img.gz | pv > /dev/sdc will use size of /dev/sdc.

@Yeah1Whatever I also use it every time I deal with big files (or slow media/connection).Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I'd add tmux, atop, nmap and ncdu to that list

I don't use even 10% of its features. For console use what else would you use. Nano? *that* is lacking features. Emacs? Massive bloated behemoth. I use Kate for development, but that's something to use from a workstation, not something to install on every machine I touch.

dd in newer versions also shows progress information: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/null status=progress

No actual progress bar, percentage, or ETA. It only shows what pv shows in dumb pipe mode.
