It's sad how almost nobody teaches old UNIX goodies these days. I don't remember how I learned about man page sections but certainly nobody taught me. Some people on Reddit discovered script(1) after I used it to crash grsec. What's your favorite less well known UNIX tool/trivia?

Definitely tac, my former coworkers tried from time to time to "correct" my scripts assuming it's cat misspelled :)

I know this one from 4K demos. A trick for packing data into a shellscript is to "tac" it to the end, then have the script tac itself. Works great if whatever binary file format you used ignores trailing junk (and tac is binary-clean even though it's meant for text).

Then there's its sibling, rev, which is also handy sometimes.
