      Assuming a manpage for [thing] as a program exists. if not itll try man 2 thing, then man 3 thing, etc. Basically resolves whatever the first thing could be.

      so in most unix systems "man printf" == "man 3 printf", unless you create a program and name it printf and give it a manpage, in which case then "man printf" would should your manpage for your program named printf

      Looks like it's been in POSIX since 1994 at least. Turns out when you give C programmers a useful tool, someone will wrap it into a shell helper :-) (probably a big reason for the manpage sections; many shell commands just call the identically-named fn!) http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/printf.html …

          Have you ever read RFCs? I used to really like reading those as a kid, cus it would be like *galaxy brain* by the end of the night. Everything made sense!
