Are there any good, minimal bare metal x86 hypervisors worth hacking on? I'm thinking pass through all the hardware, but allow basic hooking and especially guest kernel debugging, 32bit guests, and maybe memory remapping.

Problem statement: insulate a rather legacy 32bit (no PAE) Linux kernel (+blob modules) with realtime requirements from the underlying more modern 64bit CPU/memory map, and allow debugging.

This one maybe? Ramooflax: https://github.com/airbus-seclab/ramooflax … Never tried it myself so far, but I saw it when it was published years ago and it seems to be made for exactly this task.
