hot take: USB 3 / USB type-C sucks. speeds over 1 Gbps? many motherboards only route PCI-e 3 x1 to the USB controller so nope Ethernet alternate mode? doesn't exist Thunderbolt alternate mode? exists but Thunderbolt chipsets are fucking unobtainium without public docs

I’m confused, PCIe gen 3 supports up to 1 gigabyte/sec transfer speed. USB 3.0 supports 500 megabyte/second while USB 3.1 supports 1 gigabyte/second. What’s the bottleneck?

It happens to the best of us.
By the way, USB3.0 physical layer is almost the same as PCIe gen 2 physical layer. USB 3.1 physical layer is almost the same as PCIe gen 3. Except USB 3.2 uses an encoding scheme more efficient than 8b10b.1 reply 1 retweet 7 likes -

I actually meant 3.1 there. But yes, 3.2 is out. http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/ …

PCIe Gen3 uses 128b/130b encoding, not 8b/10b.
