There is no analog in the entire chain (other than after the Focusrite, which would be the speakers). Thing is the streams etc area always running, there's no "sleep" involved. USB shenanigans on the MIDI side, the Kronos, or e.g. Pianoteq getting swapped out perhaps?

Maybe some weird USB Powersaving behaviour?

reminds me of how my AV receiver setup doesn't start playing back anything until a second or so after the first samples start playing out

My HDMI audio extractor does the same thing and it's really annoying. With some sources it completely eats things, e.g. the Nintendo Switch menu click sounds just disappear (I guess it suspends the stream when nothing is playing) unless I scroll quickly.

If you are using Windows, try turning USB selective suspend off.

JACK on windows would be... possible but rather obscure. Nah, this is Linux :-) (though it has USB suspend knobs too).

Looks like some kind of low power mode

but but... using a Kronos just as a midi keyboard interface isn't a bit wasteful?? ;) I use a Casio CDP-130 scaled hammer-action which might feel just as good for 1/10 of the cost maybe?

I know, I know. I use it as a synth too, and originally for piano, but then I discovered Pianoteq which has taken over the piano synth role. I still use it for other instruments :)
