pv can ignore errors, but it can't do seeks and skips. However, 99% of the time people don't use that. OTOH, pv uses splice(), which is much more efficient than reading/writing like dd does. dd is fine for surgery, but no longer necessary to just copy data to/from block devices.

That sounds reasonable. I guess I’m in the minority in my atypical use of dd. I wonder how many Linux distros or other OSs include pv.
