I just use pv to get a pretty progress bar. There's almost no reason to actually use dd (at least on Linux) these days. pv file.iso > /dev/sdc. pv is even smart enough to guess size from stdout when stdin is a pipe, e.g. zcat file.gz | pv > /dev/sdc uses size of sdc.

I’ve not heard that dd isn’t needed anymore. I routinely use it for more than simple file copy. Can pv do seeks and skips or various block sizes or ignore errors like dd can?

pv can ignore errors, but it can't do seeks and skips. However, 99% of the time people don't use that. OTOH, pv uses splice(), which is much more efficient than reading/writing like dd does. dd is fine for surgery, but no longer necessary to just copy data to/from block devices.
