The carrier doesn't matter, only the lower-rate modulation does. You can plug in a simple photosensor into an audio input (20kHz frequency response) and get decodable data out. I've done that to sniff IR in a pinch several times.

Those bars you're seeing can't be the carrier. They're much too wide. Those are baseband data bits. The carrier would be much higher frequency and a much higher multiple of the data (there's quite a few carrier cycles per modulation symbol)
