      My understanding is they tried to convert their 120V 3 phase supply to 120V 1 phase, but when they did it they somehow messed it up and blew out stuff in the vacuum pumps? I'm not sure what you'd need to do to get 400V relative to neutral but it's p bad. Curious what blew out.

      If the center tap gets put in the wrong spot you can have a "lifted" transformer, thus getting correct voltage phase to phase but way too much potentiall to nutural.

      Oh duh i forgot that 3 phase was done with tapped transformers. So instead of 240 Vpp, they landed 120 Vpp by grabbing the wrong one of the 2 center taps on the output coil, yeah?

      Standard European power (I saw German mentioned) is 3 phase, 230V phase to neutral, 400V phase to phase. You wire single phase loads phase to neutral, but it sounds like somehow that got mixed up with phase to phase.

      Y usually, with a real neutral. Pure 3 phase stuff can use delta style, but there's never any of that funny wild leg asymmetric neutral delta stuff.
