Really I think there was just a significant impedance mismatch between intent (pushing back for a joke in poor taste) and how it came across (assumption of malice). This is yet another example where the terseness of Twitter really doesn't help.

I think to some extent vague jabs are OK? Obviously ignoring that he was hurting people unintentionally. If that weren't the case, it just boils down to "I use a big comical knife to open my packages and [carefully, though] cut towards myself as a jab towards knife safety".

Ugh, yeah, that was cringy. I still don't think he's being a dick on purpose, but he needs to realize those kinds of comments hurt a lot more than he thinks they do. It's not just fun and games.
