I don't think bringing it up at all is the issue; in this case I think you jumped to assuming malicious intent. I agree it's a stupid/insensitive joke, but I think he's poking fun at those who have (unfortunately) co-opted the term "trigger" to mean "think I don't like".

You used the words "out of his way" and "deliberate"; that implies intent. Sure, intent does not matter if you look at it from purely the point of view of impact, but it does when you're trying to establish a dialogue about the issue.

The way it came across to me is that you implied he knew about psychological triggering and was at best mocking the concept and at worst deliberately trying to invoke a trigger response in certain people.

The thing is, I know for a fact that people have explained the implications of PTSD triggering to him both before and after that incident and he’s taken the view of “I don’t have any responsibility; anything I say will offend _someone_”, and refuses to change.

He definitely makes it look like he’s enjoying poking fun at people who get upset over dilutive uses of the word “trigger”. See e.g: http://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/feminist-professor-thinks-'rigor'-is-evil/msg1442135/#msg1442135 …

[I should probably tag that link that with a CW for misogyny, dismissiveness of mental health issues, gender essentialism, and obviously his use of the word ‘trigger’.]

TBH, that thread is such a mess of a mix of valid points with terrible ones all the way from unintentional malice to overt misogyny that I think trying to untangle it is a can of worms I'm not willing to open right now. Suffice it to say, this stuff is complicated. :/

FFS can we just not mention gender at all, it always seems to piss somebody off. I'm getting super tired of a few ppl getting all bent out of shape about tech videos about tech that say the wrong word. The only gender I care about is the + and - on 100Amp DC power connectors.

I once had a conversation about whether connector genders contributed to sexism in STEM. Someone was convinced there was a problem. There are definitely issues to be worked out... but that isn't one of them. Some people just seek to polarize everything. Pun not intended.

IMO our 'group' {EE-interested folks who follow similar online) all have our personal {whatever stuff} but we enjoy interacting online about tech stuff. I love it. It works well. If I said "X is irrelevent as s/he's a wo/man' would be ludicrous. Can we just be asexual online?

You may be fine with not discussing gender, but you’re sitting in a position of privilege. So, so many other people aren’t; and it is absolutely horrifying that you suggest they just shut up about the legitimate inequalities they face because you want to be spared thinking of it.
