I don't think bringing it up at all is the issue; in this case I think you jumped to assuming malicious intent. I agree it's a stupid/insensitive joke, but I think he's poking fun at those who have (unfortunately) co-opted the term "trigger" to mean "think I don't like".

If I didn't have real friends who fit this description and have privately told me their displeasure at this kind of thing while publicly staying well away from involving themselves because they have more than enough stuff to deal with already, I wouldn't be bringing this up.

So in the end those people don't engage, and instead disconnect themselves from such discourse while quietly suffering with their issues and watching the world become more and more polarized around them.
