I don't think bringing it up at all is the issue; in this case I think you jumped to assuming malicious intent. I agree it's a stupid/insensitive joke, but I think he's poking fun at those who have (unfortunately) co-opted the term "trigger" to mean "think I don't like".
I focused on this issue as an example of how immediately confrontational approaches are, I think, just not helpful. Dave is no angel; I'm not a huge fan of some of his other antics either. I just don't like seeing *discussion* of these issues between people I respect going badly.

The control loop thing wasn't something I just made up for topic-relevant brownie points. It really is something I've thought about long and hard. I think a lot of the world's problems today stem from a culture of escalation, overreaction, assumption of evil intent, and "payback"
