Lol, IDA Pro on Linux is actually still using the legacy PC Speaker to beep. Two ways, even - somehow it goes through *both* the i8042 controller and the HDA beep widget, resulting in a weird mixed beep sound that auto-mutes currently playing audio.

I think the PC speaker is exposed as an input device and then IDA is using X11. whatever interface is twiddled by `xset b off`.
Ah, yes, it is going through X indeed. And yes, the kernel interface is through input devices. I guess X just uses... all of them.
