Some "server-grade" Ethernet cards have an embedded CPU like that too (I don't remember if it was Intel, Broadcom, or Mellanox)

Of course, you'd then use this new capability to run DRBD over the network link, using the HBAs both for the local disks and the distributed RAID. Bonus points for implementing DRBD in the firmware itself.
