Here's my little horror story with a less-than-popular LSI card. These things work great once you get the right firmware on them, but getting there can be tricky depending on the model.https://marcan.st/2016/05/crossflashing-the-fujitsu-d2607/ …

Some "server-grade" Ethernet cards have an embedded CPU like that too (I don't remember if it was Intel, Broadcom, or Mellanox)

I mean, you can run Linux on a HDD controller, so... Yeah, why not. http://spritesmods.com/?art=hddhack&page=1 …

yeah, I know that one, but a SAS controller seems more fun. you know why? you could hack it into a 24 Gbps SASternet card if you could control transceivers

Of course, you'd then use this new capability to run DRBD over the network link, using the HBAs both for the local disks and the distributed RAID. Bonus points for implementing DRBD in the firmware itself.

Turns out target mode on these controllers is already a thing and you don't even need to hack the firmware. Ha.https://github.com/exactassembly/meta-xa-stm …

Okay, that repo is a lot more fun than I expected. It includes the *source code* to lsiutil (labeled proprietary yada yada). This tool has a *LOT* of stuff. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this.pic.twitter.com/6EKBOvCdHo

that's actually surprisingly well-written, and you can even build it for EFI
