i've spent today digging into NASes and let me tell you it's a trash fire of remarkable proportions task: put 8 3.5" hard drives on a network. your choices are: a) 8-bay synology b) 8-bay qnap c) aggregating more than one 4-bay or 6-bay NAS
The limitations and quirks of the MD1000 are undocumented (e.g. yes, it works with >2T drives). If you're interested in that route I can fill you in.
