Each new release of Firefox for Linux performs worse on my machine. Huge delays (sometimes minutes) every time I open a new window. I have NO extensions or plugins installed. It's not anything in my profile, I've tried deleting the profile and starting from scratch.

the mac build has had similar problems over the course of the last year and a half too. it takes over a minute to start, sometimes it takes as long as yer observing to open a new window... very irritating. FF used to be lean and mean. now it's slow, bloated bullshit.

I'm not entirely certain, but I think I've had this problem with Firefox on Linux for about three years, getting progressively worse. I wonder what browser the Firefox developers actually use, because they certainly can't be eating their own dogfood.

Strange OS interactions can bite you in the ass sometimes. For example, installing or touching any font causes a fontconfig cache rebuild that can take minutes if you have big (CJK) fonts installed, triggering on next app start (affects Firefox, Chromium equally).

I would strace Firefox when it's exhibiting the problem to try to figure out what it's doing. It could be caused by a deep dependency and not something inherent to Firefox itself.

How can I strace "when it's exhibiting the problem"?
