Want to make one of those "my weird path to infosec" posts but like... my "weird path" was basically: be super privileged, go to super good school for privileged people and get a degree in something slightly different, mess with stupid video game consoles, get infosec job

Thing is, when it really came down to it, what mattered most was just that hobby of cracking things in my spare time. It's hard to express how rare it is for people to do this stuff out of enjoyment/passion, so if that's you, don't even worry abt finding an infosec job i guess?

Geographical location, ability to speak English well (and understanding how to behave/nuance in western business environment), are somewhat important factors too I’d guess.

Oh absolutely. I mean don't get me wrong, I am 100% sure my being white, male-presenting, having a good suit, etc. greased the wheels a ton. I just wanted to try to put out a positive note that anyone can do it, but I have no doubts whatsoever that the privilege made it easier.

Wearing a suit is a minus, not a plus, in certain subsets of infosec (and IT in general) :P
