On the one hand, that's a lot of mail index On the other, that's a small limit
And to make things worse, apparently I can't even refilter the folder into subfolders because sieve-filter dies with the same error.

Looks like it was just the cache file (which I think I can delete with impunity), the actual index was fine (which I can't - mdbox actually requires it to know where mail is actually stored). Refiltering into monthly subfolders...
