if i have to deal with sqlalchemy and its mangling of utf8mb4 on mariadb again, i'm going to strangle myself using python

yes, but i keep pushing that off...
All I can say is I built a system on Py3 + Postgres + SQLAlchemy last year and it's worked out very well. I don't remember any Unicode issues.
