Unfortunately history shows us that consoles with robust piracy have robust homebrew. Fortunately I’ve yet to see conclusive evidence that piracy “kills” a device or substantially hurts devs. I still think great consoles and great games sell regardless.
You got that backwards. Consoles with robust homebrew usually have robust piracy. The problem is that consoles with robust piracy may not have robust homebrew. We had that happen with the PS3 and we learned our lesson. Piracy and no homebrew is not a desirable outcome.
Maybe it’s the old “chicken or the egg” argument. Personal opinion is that PS3 retail sales and homebrew didn’t seem to suffer much because of piracy. A fully supported console with AAA titles seems to prevail. Fact is vast majority of folks are scared to “hack” their $400 device
I respect every dev’s decision to share or keep private. However, I think the coolest things happen in the scene (and life) when all things are shared/open source
