The key is JS is loosely typed. Unlike other langs there aren't integer arrays nor string arrays but arrays of whatever. Checking if all values are the same type would be inefficient so default sorting function considers items as string. Else write your own comparing function.
Nonsense. It is a lot less efficient to convert to string than it is to just use the existing comparison operator logic. Python does not have this problem and it's dynamically typed too.
