WTF, my brand new Threadripper just died. Dead short across EPS12V, and there's an unmistakable hint of magic smoke smell near the regulators. I sure hope the motherboard didn't die and take out the CPU with it...

Yeeeah I'm pretty sure a buck converter FET shorted itself out, and that delivered 12V to the CPU Vcore, which then shorted out too. EPS12V is only shorted when the CPU is inserted into the socket. Back to Amazon they both go.

I had a buck do that on a VR camera rig; had a large 16v lipo on the input and >$6000 worth of GoPros (5v input) on the output. Thankfully no caps exploded, the GoPro's PMUs shut down, and the rig survived. Now I don't trust bucks w/o extra clamp protection for that kinda payload

Looks like the CPU is fine after all! I guess they just have low-ish resistance due to leakage naturally, even powered off (but at 1V that isn't much power).
