I looked at microcode_amd_fam17h.bin (supposed microcode fix for Spectre) and it *only* applies to fam17h model 1 stepping *2*. Which as far as I can tell is EPYC. My Threadripper is stepping *1* and is *NOT* updated by this microcode. So consumer CPUs are NOT fixed yet.

Variant 1 requires code fixes. Even newer CPUs or microcode aren't going to fix that one in *all* cases. Variant 2 can be worked around with compiler patches but having the microcode fix means you can use existing binaries and may be faster in *some* microarchitectures.
